How to Measure Your Dog's Neck for the Perfect Collar Size

Choosing the right collar size for your dog is crucial for their comfort and safety. A collar that is too tight can cause discomfort, while a collar that is too loose may slip off or get caught on something.

Here's a guide to help you measure your dog's neck and find the perfect collar fit.

Gather the necessary tools.

Before you start measuring your dog's neck, make sure you have the necessary tools. You will need a flexible measuring tape, which can be found at most craft or fabric stores. If you don't have a measuring tape, you can use a piece of string or ribbon and then measure it with a ruler. 

Measure your dog's neck circumference

To measure your dog's neck circumference, place the measuring tape around the base of their neck, where their collar would sit. Make sure the tape is snug but not too tight, and that you can still fit two fingers between the tape and your dog's neck.  It's important to measure your dog's neck periodically, as their size and weight can change over time.   

 Wide width or regular width collar?

A wide collar may be more appropriate for a dog that pulls on the leash during walks. Wide collars are also great for larger dogs and sighthounds.

Try on the collar and make adjustments as needed

Once you have measured your dog's neck and selected a collar that fits their size, it's important to try it on and make any necessary adjustments. The collar should fit snugly but not be too tight, allowing you to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. If the collar is too loose, it may slip off or your dog may be able to slip out of it. Make sure to check the fit of your dog's collar regularly, especially as they grow or gain/lose weight

  

 How to Measure: Use a soft tape measure and pull the tape snug but not tight. Allow sufficient room to slip two fingers between the collar and your pup's neck.
